German businesses expect improvement, survey shows

Business confidence in Germany, Europe's largest economy, dropped to a new all-time low in June but expectations for the future continued to improve, a closely watched survey showed Monday.

The Munich-based Ifo institute's business climate index _ an average of its current situation and future expectations numbers _ improved overall to 85.9 points from 84.3 the month before, the third consecutive increase since March when the indicator hit a 26-year low of 82.2 points.

"The survey results confirm that the German economy is gradually stabilizing," Ifo president Hans-Werner Sinn said in a statement.

The survey, based on around 7,000 …

How Teens Can Defray Costs

While parents often are the primary source for prom financing, teens can share the load.

"I know some students who are working to save money for theirprom," said Henoc Erku, a senior student at Lane Tech High School."They are working part-time at McDonald's, at hardware stores andretail shops, during the week or on weekends."

The high turnover rate at grocery stores, pizzerias, hot dogstands and ice cream parlors makes jobs easier to obtain.

And there's babysitting. With more mothers working, there ismore need for after-school and evening babysitters. Pay may behigher if teens provide additional services, such as tutoring orhousekeeping.

TORONTO (AP) — Simon Gagne made an impressive return to the Tampa Bay Lightning lineup, scoring 1:15 into overtime Tuesday night for a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Most adoptions from China now special-needs cases

Not long ago, the choices facing Robert and Julie Garrett would have been simpler. Once they set their hearts on adopting a child from China, the odds were high they could soon bring home a healthy infant girl.

It's different now.

Faced with a long wait _ and a smaller pool of healthy orphans available to foreigners _ the Garretts have decided after much soul-searching to adopt one of the special-needs children who now abound in China's orphanages.

"It's really hard, and we want to make the right choice," said Julie Garrett, of Gainesville, Ga.

The children's conditions range widely. Some are correctible, some not: cleft lips and …

Sweden extends bank guarantee program

The Swedish government said Thursday it will extend its credit guarantee program for banks by six months to maintain stability in the financial sector, amid fears about economic turmoil in Latvia where Swedish banks do extensive business.

The government said the program, providing credit guarantees to banks of up to 1.5 trillion kronor ($214.5 billion), will be extended to the end of April next year.

"Even if the financial markets have improved during the past year it is too early to start winding up the guarantee program," Financial Markets Minister Mats Odell said in a statement. "There is still a need for an extra security net if financial stability should deteriorate again."

Odell also said he wanted to coordinate the eventual phase-out of bank support programs with other countries within the European Union.

The credit guarantee was part of last year's bank security package, which also included a 15 billion kronor ($2.1 billion) stability fund to bail out Swedish banks with solvency problems.

The Swedish banks Swedbank AB, SEB AB and Nordea AB, account for 50 percent of Latvia's banking industry and mass loan defaults in the Baltics is expected to reverberate through Sweden as well. Latvia has need an international bailout loan and is struggling to prevent a devaluation of its currency, which could hit people who borrowed money in foreign currency.

Earlier this week Sweden's finance minister Anders Borg lashed out at Latvia for failing to fulfill obligations set in a bailout loan agreement signed last summer. The troubled Baltic nation on Thursday said it will try to find ways to further reduce next year's budget deficit and meet lenders' demands.

The Latvian government is holding an extraordinary meeting next Monday to try to come up with budget solutions.

The Latvian currency, the lat, is pegged to the euro, but the country's financial difficulties have led to speculation that the peg might have to be abandoned. If that happens, people who owe money in foreign currency could see payments rise, potentially leading to more loan defaults.

Hoelzl wins World Cup GS, Vonn crashes

Kathrin Hoelzl of Germany won a women's World Cup giant slalom on Monday after overall champion Lindsey Vonn hurt her arm in a crash on the opening run.

Hoelzl led after the first run and posted a combined time of 2 minutes, 16.61 seconds to edge Manuela Moelgg of Italy by 0.05 seconds. Taina Barioz of France took third, 0.11 behind Hoelzl.

Vonn feared she had broken her arm but tests showed she had suffered only swelling and the American should be fit to start Tuesday's slalom.

Hoelzl, who won the GS world title at Val d'Isere in February, held off a brave challenge by Moelgg, who had the fastest second-run time.

"I am very relieved after it was so close in the end," Hoelzl said, following her second World Cup victory after winning in Aspen, Colorado, in November. "Val d'Isere has given me a lot of confidence. I am skiing really well but only think about the next race, not yet about the Olympics."

Vonn lost her balance on a bump after a sharp left turn and fell backwards, hitting a gate and losing a ski. After staying down for almost 10 minutes and receiving first aid, she stood up, put her skis back on and went down the hill with her arm in a sling.

Maria Riesch, who is the closest challenger to Vonn in the overall standings, went immediately after the American and was distracted by the crash of her close friend. The German skier missed a gate on the middle section of the partly icy Schlossberg course.

"It's hard to stay focused and keep your concentration during such a break," said Riesch.

"But it wasn't the main reason for my mistake. It's more down to my lack of self-confidence in GS at the moment."

Vonn stayed top of the overall table on 581 points, with Riesch in second place on 531.

Austria's Kathrin Zettel, who led the GS standings going into the race but was overtaken by Hoelzl, was 0.95 seconds behind the German after skiing off-course in her first run and finished fifth.

Hoelzl now has 281 points in the discipline, while Zettel is second with 265.

Zettel hurt her right knee in training on Saturday and only decided to race at the last minute.

Olympic GS champion Julia Mancuso, who finished second at Lienz two years ago, did not qualify for the second run. The American hit a gate and came almost to a standstill before finishing more than five seconds behind Hoelzl.

Emmanuel has various communion services

Winkler, Man.

Communion at Emmanuel Mennonite Church here is a sacred event celebrated eight or nine times a year.

[Graph Not Transcribed]

Every Maundy Thursday, just before Good Friday, the church holds a love feast. The evening begins with a meal of soup and bread, followed by the story of Jesus' betrayal and the last supper. Seated around tables, members break bread for one other and share grape juice.

The story of Jesus washing his disciples' feet in John 13 leads to an invitation for members to demonstrate their willingness to serve one another, and accept service, by participating in footwashing or hand washing.

A rugged cross is a focal point.

"People are invited to pray at the cross," said Marvin Koop, pastor. "There is continual movement to the cross. We try to connect our Lenten theme to the service. One year we had a broken pot and the pieces were placed on each table. People brought these pieces to the cross as symbols of their brokenness."

Another occasion when communion is celebrated is in midsummer, when the church family is more scattered.

"In a time when we're all going different ways it serves to draw us together," said Koop.

Emmanuel Mennonite also brings in the new year with a communion service.

In addition, Easter Sunday, World Communion Sunday in October, and the first Sunday of Advent are always celebrated with communion. Every baptism service includes a communion celebration.

"In 2002 we had four or five baptism services, but usually there aren't more than two," said Koop. Emmanuel Mennonite has two worship services every Sunday to accommodate a membership of over 200.

Koop recalled that when he came nine years ago, communion services were sometimes held Sunday evenings. Attendance, however, was low and now communion is part of morning worship, except for Maundy Thursday.

"At our communion services...all who are baptized are invited to partake," he said. "We begin with an explanation of what communion means, have a prayer of confession and then pass the peace of Christ."

Sometimes the two pastors and lay minister invite participants to come to the front in small groups to receive the communion elements and a blessing. Other times the deacons serve the elements to members in the pews.

"Sometimes, especially at our Easter Sunday communion service, we have a more celebratory communion," said Koop. "We have a banquet-type of display with special fruits. We have a large communion banner which we display at all communion services."

Inexperienced New Zealand top order meets strong pace attack in first test vs. South Africa

New Zealand's inexperienced top order comes up against a strong South Africa pace attack when the first of two tests starts Thursday at Wanderers Stadium.

Bowlers Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn played a central role in a 2-0 series defeat of the Black Caps in South Africa two tears ago, and this time a batch of Kiwi newcomers will be in the firing line.

Openers Michael Papps and Craig Cumming have played a total of just 13 tests, and neither has yet to hit a century yet. The 23-year-old Ross Taylor, who has played 24 one-day internationals, is expected to make his test debut batting at No. 5.

The South African opening attack will be supported by Andre Nel, who starred in difficult conditions in South Africa's 1-0 series victory in Pakistan last month, so there is no place for veteran Shaun Pollock.

The Proteas will be able to call on the left-arm spin of Paul Harris, who took 12 wickets in the two tests in Pakistan _ the best performance from a bowler on either side.

In contrast to New Zealand's inexperienced top order, South Africa will rely on the consistent form of Jacques Kallis, resurgent captain Graeme Smith, the reliable Hashim Amla and Ashwell Prince, and stroke play of Herschelle Gibbs and A.B. de Villiers.

For New Zealand, the batting performance of former captain Stephen Fleming will be crucial. While he has support in the middle order from the likes of Scott Styris and new captain Daniel Vettori, he will have to survive what is likely to be a tough examination to be able to construct a decent innings.

The New Zealanders looked vulnerable to pace in their final warmup match, which they lost by 85 runs to South Africa A. The raw talents of Lonwabo Tsotsobe and Friedl de Wet took 15 of the 20 Kiwi wickets to fall.

Shane Bond will spearhead the Black Caps' pace bowling, but he has not been as successful against South Africa as he has against other countries.

However, Jacob Oram's medium-pacers will pose a challenge to the local batsmen. He took eight wickets against South Africa A, including 5-16 in the second innings.

Lineups:

SHAUNNA HALL: ELECTROFUNKADELICA

SHAUNNA HALL: ELECTROFUNKADELICA

Shaunna Hall has been on the music scene for quite a while, and with her new album, Electrofunkadelica, shows she's still got it and is still growing. This album spans a gamut of genres ranging from electronic, to folk, to funk, to hip-hop. Hall engineered the album herself using an Apple Powerbook, an M-Box and Pro Tools while she was on tour with George Clinton and the P-funk All-Stars.

The first track has Hall giving a hats off to Clinton by covering "Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts," focusing on the beautiful and socially charged lyrics over a trance-like, psychedelic groove. Hall takes care of vocals on this one, yet shares the duties with others throughout the album, including rapper Sativa Diva.

Hall's ability to utilize looping shines throughout all 12 tracks, though especially eight, nine, 10 and 12, on which it's just her and her pedals. Track 10, "Save Myself," and 12, "Details," sound like a modern twist on the wave of inspiration that gave birth to her megahit group, Four Non-Blondes. These are the two tunes she really sings. This sista's got soul.

Aside from the tunes, she applies ambient sounds and textural grooves with orchestral thoughtfulness throughout, leaning toward an almost movie-soundtrack vibe. Hall seems to be making music for the sake of music, which is a musical ideologist's dream. The tracks are as long as she wanted them, which happens to be longer than the standard radio playtime. Though not logical from a business standpoint, it's spiritually a commendable act. This looping, funky-soul diva is definitely on my radar.

Dow Ends Up 8, Nasdaq Finishes Unchanged

NEW YORK - Wall Street limped to a mixed finish Monday as uncertainty over the situation in the Middle East and a disappointing earnings report from Citigroup gave traders little impetus to buy after last week's selloff.

With violence in Israel and Lebanon continuing into a sixth day and no resolution in sight, the markets remained wary despite a sharp drop in oil prices. A barrel of light crude settled at $75.30, down $1.73, on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Unfortunately, right now this conflict in the Middle East is the elephant in the room, and nothing's going to happen until there's a little more clarity there," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank. "This is probably a market best viewed from the sidelines."

The U.S. economy continued to show strength, with industrial production rising 0.8 percent in June, according to the Federal Reserve, far better than the 0.4 percent economists expected. That encouraged investors who had feared the economy would have trouble withstanding high energy prices and higher interest rates.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 8.01, or 0.07 percent, to 10,747.36. The Dow slid 3.17 percent last week.

Broader stock indicators were narrowly mixed. The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 1.71, or 0.14 percent, to 1,234.49, and the Nasdaq composite index climbed 0.37, or 0.02 percent, to 2,037.72.

While the Fed's overall production data was strong, a report by the New York Federal Reserve showed slower-than-expected manufacturing growth in New York state. The Empire State Index fell to 15.6 in July from 29 in June. Economists expected the index to fall to 20.

The conflicting manufacturing reports did little for the bond market, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note steady at 5.07 percent from late Friday. The dollar made gains against most major currencies, and gold prices also climbed.

The mix of news and mediocre earnings led to lethargic trading, especially with the consumer price index and producer price index - two key measures of inflation - due later in the week along with congressional testimony from Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke Wednesday and a slew of major earnings reports.

"There's not much news out today that's really going to push the markets either way, so you're seeing this choppy tape right now," said equity trader Brian Williamson of the Boston Company Asset Management. "You got 80 percent of the S&P 500 reporting over the next four weeks, so the scale's not ready to be tipped either way yet."

Dow industrial Citigroup was another in a line of mildly disappointing earnings reports that have stoked investors' concerns over stocks in recent weeks. Citigroup just missed Wall Street's profit forecasts by a penny per share, and its stock fell $1.18 to $46.40.

The news countered a strong sales report from fellow Dow component McDonald's Inc., which rose $1.68 to $34.72 after posting a 5.9 percent increase in June sales at stores open at least a year. The fast-food chain credited strong overseas sales and increasing breakfast demand for the gains.

Mattel Inc. posted a quarterly gain after a year-ago loss, with sales boosted from tie-in products from the "Superman Returns" and "Cars" films even as its core Barbie and Hot Wheels lines slipped. Mattel jumped $1.72, or 11 percent, to $17.60.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by nearly 9 to 7 on the New York Stock Exchange, where final consolidated volume came to 2.3 billion shares, compared with 2.63 billion shares traded Friday.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies was down 3.55, or 0.52 percent, at 677.69.

Overseas, concerns over the Middle East and North Korea's nuclear program sent Britain's FTSE 100 down 0.12 percent. France's CAC-40 lost 0.64 percent for the session, and Germany's DAX index fell 0.1 percent. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday Monday.

The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy

The Dead Hand: The Untold Story of the Cold War Arms Race and Its Dangerous Legacy David E. Hoffman, Doubleday, 2009, 577 pp.

The Dead Hand is a stunning and authoritative account of Soviet nuclear and biological weapons programs, arms control negotiations in the Cold War's last decade, and the urgent attempts by the United States in the succeeding years to stanch the dissemination of weapons and weapons technology as the Soviet Union disintegrated. David Hoffman, contributing editor and former Moscow bureau chief of The Washington Post, has uncovered a remarkable trove of evidence, including more than 10,000 pages of documents from Vitaly Katayev, a Soviet Communist Party Central Committee scribe for nearly 20 years. Enhanced by Hoffman's interviews of Soviet leaders, key military officers on the General Staff, and scientists responsible for the Soviet Union's massive clandestine program to develop and produce biological weapons and by his skillful integration of President Ronald Reagan's diaries, the book provides a brisk and compelling narrative. - GREG THIELMANN

HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — Hurricane Igor swept past Bermuda and kept lashing at the Atlantic island with high winds and furious waves on Monday as power failures in many areas plunged people hunkered down at home into darkness.

Tropical-storm-force winds continued to hit the island even after the center of the broad storm, which had weakened to just above hurricane status, passed about 40 miles (65 kilometers) to the west just before midnight. Winds of 75 mph (120 kph) battered the island, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said gusts ranged up to 93 mph (150 kph).

By dawn Monday, the hurricane's center was about 200 miles (320 kilometers) north of Bermuda and it was heading to the north-northeast at 21 mph (33 kph), the Hurricane Center reported.

A tropical storm watch was issued for the coast of Newfoundland in Canada.

Igor was predicted to veer northeast away from the United States, although forecasters said it would still cause high surf and strong rip currents along the U.S. eastern seaboard.

The National Weather Service in New York City said Igor is likely to churn up breaking waves of 6 to 10 feet (2 to 3 meters) Monday as it passes about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) from the eastern tip of Long Island. A high surf advisory was issued for the city through Tuesday morning.

Wind whipped around trees and power poles on Bermuda, while furious waves crashed over breakwaters and bridges. Yachts strained at their moorings. There were no early reports of major damage, although power was out in many areas and communications were spotty.

Richard Simons, who rents out cottages near Elbow Beach, said he was relieved to see only downed branches when he surveyed the property under pouring rain Monday morning.

"It will just take some sweeping and raking to clean up," he said.

Flooding was reported in low-lying areas of Bermuda, while streets in downtown Hamilton, the capital, were covered in several inches of water and littered with tree branches and other debris.

Bermuda's power utility reported that roughly 19,500 customers had lost electricity by Sunday evening on the British territory of 68,000 inhabitants.

Jah Simmons, 25, and Gregory Wilson, 36, headed into the center of Hamilton after their homes lost power. Both said they were relieved the storm was not stronger. "It's a blessing in my mind," Simmons said.

Igor lost strength and was downgraded from a Category 2 hurricane before dawn Sunday, raising optimism that Bermuda would be spared major damage.

"We prayed that the storm would be downgraded, and it looks like our prayers have been answered," said Fred Swan, a 52-year-old teacher.

Before Igor arrived, some storm-seasoned Bermudians ventured outside to marvel as 15-foot (5-meter) surf crashed ashore, even through the government warned people to stay indoors, keeping in mind that the high surf kicked up by Igor earlier swept two people out to sea in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, far to the south.

School principal Marion Dyer, 47, said she holed up with her 8-year-old daughter and two others after losing power around dawn Sunday, when Igor's outer bands began severely whipping Bermuda.

"Now and again we get bursts of wild wind which sends the rain in all directions," Dyer wrote in an e-mail to an Associated Press reporter. "We have heard several rolls of thunder which are becoming more frequent."

While many tourists hopped on flights home before the airport closed Saturday, Elaine and Brian LaFleur of New Bedford, Massachusetts, said they actually moved up their arrival so they would be here when Igor hit. They wanted a new experience for their 28th trip to the island.

"We've done everything else on this island, but we've never experienced a hurricane," said Elaine LaFleur, 62.

Hotel cancellations were reported across Bermuda, an island about 600 miles off the U.S. coast that is popular with tourists for its pink sand beaches and with businesspeople as an offshore financial haven.

Bermuda's building codes specify that homes must be built with walls at least eight inches thick, and be able to withstand 150 mph (241 kph) gusts and sustained winds of 110 mph (177 kph). Some power and phone lines are underground.

Officials said schools would be closed Monday and Tuesday, and a local newspaper canceled its Monday edition.

Also in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Julia was maintaining its intensity as it swirled about 1,165 miles (1,880 kilometers) west of the Azores with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph (75 kph).

'Lust, Caution's' Open Hearts Aren't For Closed Minds; The Sex Is Graphic, the Love Nuanced

"Lust, Caution," a "romance noir" set in Japanese-occupiedShanghai, makes a powerful case for love as a transcendental forcethat draws people together, no matter how perverse audiences maydeem their relationship.

Director Ang Lee has created an affecting, minor-key ode to love,in the tradition of films such as "The Night Porter," "Dance With aStranger," "M. Butterfly" and "Damage." In these dramas, thepartners are morally questionable; their love becomes their onlygrace note. The tighter the outside world closes around them, themore they cling to one another, like victims falling together from agreat height. And we are torturously caught up in this, feeling pityand empathy rather than condemnation.

Adapted from a short story by Shanghai-born Eileen Chang, wholived through (and set several novels in) this 1940s backdrop, themovie unfolds like a political thriller. But its real drama occurswithin the hearts of two flawed people, drawn to each other despitea wartime atmosphere that casts them as adversaries. Theirsadomasochistic sexual liaisons -- graphically depicted -- initially alarm us. But we come to understand how this aggressivebehavior, seemingly laced with hatred and contempt, belies a growingemotional connection.

The 50ish Mr. Yee (Tony Leung) is the ruthless, debonair head ofsecurity for the collaborative Chinese government. Wang Chia-chih(Tang Wei) is a patriotic revolutionary in her 20s; she has drawnthe short straw in her circle of student radicals to seduce and lurehim into a deadly trap. When the inevitable affair takes place, shelearns she has become entangled with a sadist whose brutal bedroommanner hides a tormented tenderness. Touched instead of hardenedagainst him, she finds herself falling in love, and caught in a gameof double deception -- against Yee and her compatriots.

In spite of the NC-17 rating, Lee makes lyrical if disconcertingpoetry of their cruelly drawn affair; the director did somethingsimilar when he examined a clandestine love tinged with bitternessand regret in "Brokeback Mountain." In this world of Mahjong parlorsand opium dens, where survival is the only virtue, the lovers arefinding their own blissful asylum. And we're oddly moved by theirhermetically sealed strength of purpose.

In a film where casting is a vital component in the edgyequation, Leung and Tang make a picturesque and dramaticallycompelling couple. Leung, best known as a swoony icon in art houseromances such as "2046" and "In the Mood for Love," is castwonderfully against type. Suddenly his delicate, almost femininefeatures are fraught with menace. And Tang, who makes her debut, firmly establishes herself as a softly persuasive screen presencefor the future. In "Lust, Caution," her combination of grim purposeand almost ethereal tenderness bring a much needed personaldimension to the tragedy.

While the sexual scenes between them are explicit, they are alsosensitively portrayed. It is the sweaty sensuality of theirthrusting bodies, and the seemingly endless intensity, that makesthese encounters seem so licentious, not the sex itself. Thefilmmakers, including screenwriters James Schamus and Hui-Ling Wang, are showing us the battle between two wills, not a pornographic peepshow. (This subtle distinction has eluded the ratings board of theMotion Picture Association, which recently gave an R rating to "TheHeartbreak Kid," a comedy that makes sight gags out of forceful, graphic sex, children snorting cocaine and even bestiality.) Thatsomething so pure as love can grow in such unseeming circumstancesis testament to the one emotional state that binds most -- if notall -- of us.

Lust, Caution (157 minutes at Landmark's Bethesda Row) is ratedNC-17 for explicit sexuality. In Mandarin Chinese with subtitles.

The Missing Link

* Ford Motor Company's reinvention of the American station wagon just may be the closest thing yet to a true crossover.

Nineteen-ninety-nine was a pivotal year for the domestic automobile industry. For the first time in its history the Big 3 sold more light trucks than cars. The future of the large American sedan was looking bleak as more Americans were ditching cars in favor of more versatile SUVs and light trucks. That same year, Ford Motor Company initiated the Tall Sedan Program with the goal of reinventing the American sedan - creating a vehicle for people who needed more than just a car, loved what the minivan did for them but didn't really like the image and found true SUVs …

WILL THE BELLS TOLL FOR THEE?(Technology Information)

With the development of computers, we overlook the extraordinary advancements in the humble old telephone.

I recall the first phone call l ever made. As I lifted the earpiece, I cranked the handle on the front dial. Two shorts and a long heralded to the party at the other end that I was calling. As I stood on my toes to shout down the mouthpiece, I could hear the inevitable clicks as other uninvited parties secretly joined the conversation in the hope of picking up some local gossip! How things have changed in a few "short" years.

We recently needed to add 14 extensions to our existing office BN Commander series. I called in our resident telephone expert, Greg Little …

BUONO APPARENT WINNER BUT DEMOCRATS MAY GET MAJORITY.(Local)

Republican John L. Buono was apparently re-elected Rensselaer County executive Tuesday, but at 10:30 p.m., it was too early to tell whether his coattails were long enough to gain the necessary GOP seats on the County Legislature to support his vetoes.

Unofficial tallies showed Buono with 21,212 votes to Democratic opponent Charles "C.B." Smith's 15,435, with 86 of 132 election districts reporting.

Democrats, however, not only held onto the majority in the 19-member County Legislature, but were on the way to gaining a seat. District Attorney James Canfield was apparently re- elected to a second four-year term in the $82,000-a-year job. He led …

Saudis struggle against Yemeni rebels

Saudi Arabia's latest announcement of the death toll in its two-month old battle with Yemeni rebels along the border is a stark reminder of the ferocity of the fighting in this remote part of the Arabian peninsula, even as the kingdom tries to use air strikes and artillery to minimize casualties.

On Tuesday, Prince Khaled bin Sultan, the Saudi assistant defense minister, said clashes with Yemeni rebels have killed 82 Saudis and left 21 missing, in one of his regular briefings on the fighting since his forces went on the offensive on Nov. 5.

Yemen's Hawthi rebels have been battling their own government since 2004 over neglect and discrimination, but when …

But what he has told a State Police investigator has people in the Capital Region -- particularly those who knew his victims -- wanting to ask him one question above all: Why?

For Gary Evans, a 43-year-old Troy native with a reputation as a thief, an antiques burglar and a sometimes police informant, has now confessed to five murders since 1985, police say. He allegedly has led investigators to the bodies of two victims buried in Rensselaer County, told them about a third in Florida and admitted shooting two shop owners in Watertown and Little Falls.

``If I could just lay eyes on him and look at him and say, `What did you do?' '' said Mary DiPiero of Slingerlands.
