FEDERATION (CANBERRA)

Australia celebrates its 100th birthday as a nation today.

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD, state premiers and territory chief ministers will follow
in the footsteps of Australia's first governor-general, Lord HOPETOUN, in Sydney's Centennial
Park.

The day begins with a dawn service at Alice Springs where the Arrente people will invite
all Australians to take part in the celebration.
