Theater world grapples with question of color // `Saigon' furor pits realism against art

The pressure is on American theater to show its true colors.

The recent high drama surrounding the casting - and cancellation- of a Broadway production of "Miss Saigon" has focused a klieg lighton "color-blind casting" and prompted an intensely emotional debateover the nature of reverse discrimination.

On Tuesday, the Actors Equity Association - the unionrepresenting the majority of stage actors in Chicago and many othermarkets - denied permission for English actor Jonathan Pryce to playa lead role in the production of "Miss Saigon," a Vietnam-era storyof racial prejudice.
