I recall the first phone call l ever made. As I lifted the earpiece, I cranked the handle on the front dial. Two shorts and a long heralded to the party at the other end that I was calling. As I stood on my toes to shout down the mouthpiece, I could hear the inevitable clicks as other uninvited parties secretly joined the conversation in the hope of picking up some local gossip!
