NSW: Union to lobby for new drug dealer laws
The New South Wales Police Association says it will lobby the NSW government for legislation
to better target street drug dealers, focusing efforts on Sydney's troubled west.
Association president MARK BURGESS announced the move after a meeting in the Cabramatta
precinct attended by Police Commissioner PETER RYAN and Police Minister PAUL WHELAN.
Mr BURGESS says that one of his main concerns is that the Controlled Operations Act,
which was brought in to target high-level police interaction with drug dealers, is inhibiting
police on the ground.
He wants changes to enable street officers to better target lower-level dealers, by
removing red tape and making the procedure less formalised.
