Empire Blue Cross and Blue Shield rolled out its top fraud investigator Wednesday in an effort to focus public attention on health insurance fraud.
Medical equipment is one of the main areas leading to insurance fraud, said Thomas Ward, director of the medical insurer's fraud unit.
"Medical equipment fraud ...," he said, "comes in bunches because it's driven by new products and new technologies."
Among the items sold to unsuspecting consumers who quite frequently have no medical need for them, according to Ward, are seat- lift chairs, flotation mattresses, nebulizers and transcutaneous electric nerve …
